RoeblingFest 2010 will combine the festival sponsored by the Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee (CCSBC) with the neighborhood party organized by the Roebling Point Business Association.  The event is scheduled for Saturday 12 June.  John A. Roebling was born on that date in 1806.  RoeblingFest will begin at 11 am and conclude with fireworks shortly after nightfall.

For the past five years, the Covington Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee has hosted RoeblingFest, a Celebration of Art, Architecture, History and Engineering along the Covington riverbanks by the south tower.  The CCSBC is a citizen’s group dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the John A. Roebling Bridge.

RoeblingFest 2010 comes in the midst of the CCSBC’s campaign to raise $450,000 in private donations to replace the lights with a new energy efficient “green” lighting system and create a maintenance fund.   The CCSBC is a volunteer citizen’s organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Roebling Bridge.  The group is responsible for providing and maintaining the flags and decorative lighting.

The Roebling Point Business District was created in 2007 by a group of bar and restaurant owners determined to create a vibrant entertainment district and a welcoming gateway into Covington for people crossing the Roebling suspension bridge from Cincinnati and the Veterans Memorial Bridge from Newport.  This fledgling district has become a popular place to eat, drink, enjoy entertainment, work and live.  A beautiful area rich in history and architecture Roebling Point is centrally located and has wide appeal.  In 2009 the 1st Annual Roebling Point Block party was held to bring the community together for a day of games, food, beer and entertainment.

This year the CCSBC and the Roebling Point Business Association joined together to expand RoebingFest – a celebration Roebling Suspension Bridge; its architecture, history and engineering and the Covington riverfront heritage.

RoeblingFest 2010 will take place on Park Place between Scott and Greenup Streets, and on Court Street between 3rd and 4th Streets.    The event is free and open to the public.

Separate guided tours of the bridge, the Roebling floodwall murals, and the statues along Riverside Drive will be offered between the hours of 11 AM and 3 PM.  The statue tour will include a visit to the boyhood home of Daniel Carter Beard on Third Street.  Beard is recognized as the founder of the Boy Scouts of America.

Again this year, an art contest is being held among students from Northern Kentucky schools.  The winners will be announced at RoeblingFest and the winning entries will be displayed later at the Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park.  The theme of this year’s contest is “Lighting the Bridge”.

The festival events include a petting zoo, tricycle and Segway races for adults, a moon-bounce, a corn-hole tourney, a dunking booth, face painting, and a farmer’s market.  Entertainment will include several bands, karaoke, and bag pipers.  There is a recurring rumor that John Roebling himself will make an appearance.

Bringing History to Light

An update from the Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee

COVINGTON, Ky.  (May 12, 2010)  The Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee is making strides toward its goal to raise funds to replace the Roebling bridge lights with a new, energy efficient green lighting system.

The committee has raised approximately $105,000 toward its overall goal of $450,000, which will also be used to maintain the new system.

Tom Cody has been named the honorary chairperson of the Bringing History to Light committee.  Cody recently retired from Macys where he served as vice chairman. Cody has also served on the Cincinnati Childrens Medical Hospital Board.

He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have been married for more than 43 years. They have shared a passion for local philanthropy. Codys experience will add to the CCSBC goal of lighting the historic structure for future generations to enjoy.

The CCSBC would also like to acknowledge US Bank Foundation for a $25,000 donation toward the Bringing History to Light fund.

The committee has unveiled a new website, www.Roeblingbridge.com, where visitors can make donations to the fund. Those who donate online are eligible for a drawing to receive a Trip to the Top of the Tower for four people.  The drawing will be scheduled after the bridge painting project is complete.  The group of four will be given a tour to the top of the Covington side tower where they will be able to take in the magnificent skylines of the Ohio River towns that the Roebling Bridge connects.

On May 15, Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee members will be collecting donations before the Cincinnati Reds host the Saint Louis Cardinals for the 2010 Civil Rights Game.  CCSBC members will also be collecting at the Maifest Celebration in Covington, Kentucky.  Be sure to look for CCSBC members.  Any donation, great or small will help their fundraising efforts.

For the past five years, the CCSBS has hosted RoeblingFest, a Celebration of Art, Architecture, History and Engineering along the Covington riverbanks by the south tower.  This year the CCSBS partnered with the Roebling Point Business Association to expand RoebingFest.  On Saturday, June 12, 2010, RoeblingFest will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  June 12 is the birthday of John A. Roebling, the engineer of the historic landmark.

The festival events include a petting zoo, tricycle and Segway races for adults, a moon-bounce, a corn-hole tourney, a dunking booth, face painting, and a farmers market. Entertainment will include several bands, karaoke, and bag pipers. There is a recurring rumor that John Roebling himself will make an appearance. The festival will conclude with fireworks to light up the skyline.

In addition, to help increase awareness, the Covington Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee is sponsoring a Roebling Artwork Contest.   It is open to school age students, 4th  12th grade. This years theme is Light the Bridge.   Students are encouraged to participate in the celebration of this historic treasure!  Winners will receive a cash prize and their artwork will be shown at RoeblingFest and then displayed at the Behringer-Crawford Museum.

The Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee is excited about the vision and having Tom Cody as the honorary chairperson.  They are increasing their efforts so that money can be raised while the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is giving the structure a new coat of paint.  The painting project is scheduled to be complete in November 2010.  The CCSBS goal is to have the new lights in place by that date.
